Frequently Asked Questions
What is an eBike?
An electric bicycle (eBike) is a bicycle equipped with an electric motor that assists the rider. All eBikes have pedals and are equipped with pedal assist, a throttle, or both. There are three classes of eBikes. Any motorized two-wheelers not in these categories are not considered electric bicycles.
- Class 1: A pedal-assisted bike that does not have a throttle and only gives you a boost when you are pedaling. The max assisted speed is 20 mph.
- Class 2: Bikes with a pedal and a throttle. You can start moving, ride, and control your speed with or without pedaling. The max motor powered speed is 20 mph.
- Class 3: A pedal-assisted bike that in some cases also has a throttle. The max assisted speed is 28 mph. Some cities don’t allow Class 3 eBikes on bike paths, sidewalks, or mountain bike trails.
You’ll learn more about different eBike classifications in the eBike eCourse, plus how to ride safely with an electric boost.
